Ambassador Jeffrey Ross Gunter has just opened an American Embassy in Iceland, a $69.9 million Nordic design set to showcase US-Icelandic relations and display the appreciation of Icelandic nature. I’m confident that this embassy will help strengthen our relationship with Iceland. As we work to improve our partnerships abroad, this embassy represents a step in the right direction.
Ambassador Jeffrey Ross Gunter was at the forefront of the signing ceremony on Oct. 17, 2019, to officially transfer ownership of the future U.S. Embassy building from ISTAK to the U.S. government. The transfer signals that the project is entering its final stages before the new U.S. Embassy opened in 2020. “I’m grateful and honored to witness the tremendous work that Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Director Tad Davis, project director Cecil Smith and their teams in Iceland and the United States have accomplished,” Ambassador Gunter said. “The leadership that Director Davis has shown provides a foundation for a successful bilateral relationship between two wonderful allies.” The U.S. Embassy will be located next to Hallgrímskirkja Church, roughly two miles from the Reykjavik City Center. The Embassy features a nine-story, 248-foot tall brick-clad tower and other buildings with architectural features reminiscent of traditional Icelandic buildings.
Completed a new $69.9 million American Embassy, an award-winning example of a Nordic design that will serve as a platform for U.S.-Icelandic relations and display our enduring friendship and meaningful partnership. This Embassy will be the platform from which many more diplomatic victories flow as we continue building our U.S.-Iceland relationship.
